My greatest memory of my mom happened on the day of my prom. She and I had not really been close, she had grown up with brothers and seemed more comfortable with my brothers…as I was getting ready for the dance, I put on makeup for the first time and used an eyelash curler. My youngest brother was making fun of me and yelled, “EW! What’d she do THAT for?” My mother told him to hush, and then said, “It’s makes her eyes look like the stars…” Well, she and I locked eyes for a moment, and at that instant, I felt so loved by her. It’s a crazy, maybe even silly memory, but I remember it today as if it happened moments ago. My mother passed away a few years ago, and I remember looking in her eyes as she lay quiet on her bed and seeing the same look in her eyes. And we both giggled as I told my brothers that I was the favorite girl. (I was the only girl LOL)
If my entry is chosen, I would like the book and binder.

Growing up my mom and I fought a lot, I was a daddy’s girl and thought my mom didn’t love me. There is not an ah ha moment where mom and I got closer it just seemed to happen over the years as I grew up. I realize how much my mom has gone thru over the years and how much she really loves not only me but everyone, she is such a Godly woman and I am blessed to call her my mom. A couple years ago she moved, I was heartbroken, I felt as if my best friend was leaving me. I told mom I spent my childhood fighting you and thinking you didn’t love me now that we are friends and do so much together you are leaving and I don’t like it!!! lol We cried and hugged and cried some more. Well about a month or so after she left she posted something on Facebook I don’t even remember the original post all I remember is her comment. She said this is for my best friend, my daughter and she put my name, needless to say I cried again! I love my mom and don’t know what I would do without her and cherish every moment God gives me with her. If I win I would like the basket and book cause it will go to mom, as well as my gift to her, I cant give her enough to repay all she has done for me!

My greatest memory with my mom is when I won a trip to Naples Florida to stay at the Ritz Carlton with spa treatments and we got to spend quality time pampering ourselves. It was extra special since my dad had passed away so it enabled her to have some fun time with me.

My fondest memory of my mom is on my wedding day. We did a mother/daughter dance and in the middle of the song, she asked for a chair to be brought to the center of the dance floor, she sat down, patted her lap, and said asked me (her “lap baby”) to sit on her lap. So right there, in front of a bunch of people, in my wedding dress, I unashamedly sat on my mommy’s lap! I have always been her “lap baby”, even after I was grown, married, and had children of my own. And now that she’s gone to heaven, I hope when I see her again, I’ll be able to sit on her lap again…. and be her “lap baby” once more.

My mom and I aren’t close, so my fondest memory is with my “mother figure”, my MiMi. I spent a lot of time at her house and she was a very funny lady! She used to have me sit Indian style in the middle of the dining table while she “curled” my hair. She would spend literally HOURS taking tiny section of my hair, spraying them with a water bottle, and twisting them into this little blob on the side of my head, then securing them with a Bobby pin. I would sleep like that all night then when she pulled all the Bobby pins out the next morning, I had these amazing little spiral curls all over my head. I looked like little Orphan Annie, but I always thought it was the neatest thing ever! It takes a lot of love to spend that kind of time and energy just to make a little girl smile!

My greatest moment with my mom is currently happening now. I am an Occupational Therapy Assistant student at Owens and every semester I tell her what my grades are and she cries with happiness. I was inducted into the National Honors Society and I could tell how much it meant for her. The reason for her being so proud is because I a the first person in my family to go to college and graduate. She reminds me all the time of how proud my dad and grandparents are of me even though they have passed away. I don’t know if I would be able to continue with my education without her love and support.

My mother left me when I was 6. So my grandma took care of us. SHE was my mother. My greatest memory of her was when she was dying of Cancer I was pregnant with my first child and I was only 21 years old. She was told she would live 9 more months and she was hanging on to see my baby girl. One day she was feeling OK and she said for me to come near her and I did. She layed both her hands on my belly and started talking to my lil one ad my daughter started kicking up a storm inside me. It was a beautiful moment and I will never forget it because 3 days later my grandma passed and she did not make it to see my baby born. I’m glad she had a good day so we could have that last moment together. I thank Jesus for that sweet memory! If I win I’d like the coupon binder combo but even if I do not win I’m ok with that too…thanks for the opportunity to type this out because remembering it just made my day 🙂

I almost hate to say this, but I think my fondest memory of my mom was when I was taking care of her right before she passed away. She was bedridden but I sat by her bed and we talked. With being the youngest of 5 girls I really did not have undivided attention very much, so this was really special for me to have that time alone with her.

My best memories of my mom, Mae Hicks, is when I was about 9 or 10. She started teaching me cook. I remember learning to make cornbread and cakes. And one of my best memories is her teaching me to use her sewing machine. My first project was a potholder. It looked really bad but she bragged on it and told me what a good job I had done. I was so proud of that ugly potholder. She aways believed in me and encouraged me in whatever I wanted to do.

My mom passed away when I was 11 years old. I was one of six children (3 older, 2 younger) and although my mom wasn’t with us long, I will always remember & cherish the memories of how special she would always make each of my birthdays. Back when I was young (I am 57 now) girls used to play with dolls (Barbies were the big thing) & I remember my birthday cake that was a doll standing up and the cake & frosting cascaded down & formed her dress all poofed out like the Scarlet O’Hara dresses in Gone With the Wind. Of course, camera equipment was nothing like it is today & I remember my dad taking pictures & my mom standing off to the side of the table where the cake was with me hanging over the edge of the table & and all of my friends sitting around the table & she was holding a HUGE spotlight overhead so the pictures would come out right. I miss her and think of her often & to honor her I chose her birthdate as my wedding date 25 years ago.

My greatest memory of my mom was when I was a kid. I had braces on from the time I was about 9. My dentist was in an office a little bit of a drive from our home. Whenever I had an appointment my mom would make it early in the morning so we could be the first to be seen. Instead of taking me to school once I was done ( because appointments only lasted about 15 minutes) she would keep me out of school all day. We would go to lunch and then spend the afternoon shopping in some of our favorite stores.

My mom and I argued all the time when I was younger but as I have gotten older we have become closer. I can’t say that I have a specific memory right now but it is all those little moments that you have that we all take for granite. It is those moments driving in the car and just laughing for no reason, standing in the kitchen and getting little tips to improve my cooking, sitting outside on the patio and just enjoying the birds singing and talking about my son…It is really those little moments that I love and will always cherish. It is those moments that when she is gone that will become memories that I will always cherish.

One of the fondest memories of my mother is her gift to me when I turned sixteen. It was a very difficult time for me as I’d had bad depression and ended up in the hospital. She gave me a geode I still have to this day and a card. She reminded me how special I was like the inside of that amethyst geode even though what I saw and felt like was its rough rocky exterior. Probably not put perfectly the way she did, but close anyhow. It was something I will always remember and I think was a real turning point for me coming around.

Greatest memory with my mom is one that I actually despised her for during my teenage years. I started dating a guy and he came to our house to pick me up. When he got to the house, we were all sitting in the garage and I walked out and got into his car. When he pulled away, he gave the car a bit to much gas and the tires spun and stones flew. We had to drive around the block to get out of town. As we were coming up the road, I saw my mother sprinting towards the upcoming stop sign. She actually beat us there. Lol. As we stopped, she looked at me and said “you out of the car and home now” then looked at him and said “when you learn how to drive, you can then think about taking my daughter out.” I was completely humiliated and so angry. I didn’t talk to her for weeks. Now as an adult with my own children, I look back at this and laugh. And you better believe, I would do the same thing if my child were in that car.

I never was close to my mom, but we grew a lot closer after I had got married, when i had to go to the hospital for some pain i was in. I was waiting in a room in the er for some test results so the could know what other test they had to do, so my husband called my mom telling her what was going on, & she asked if I wanted her to come to the hospital or not, and I was in so much pain that I had a hard time trying to get out the words, “I want my mom here now” but I got them out. When she got there they decided they needed to do an ultrasound to look at my stomach to find out why i was in so much pain, so they took me upstairs did the ultrasound brought me down & we waited for the results. Come to find out I had a twisted ovary, that was the size of a softball & I was 5weeks 5days pregnant without first child Joshua. Then they told me I have two choices have surgery so it doesn’t get any larger & burst, but I have a chance of loosing the baby due to the trauma. Or don’t have the surgery, let it get larger & burst then I bleed internally & both me & baby due, so the doctors let us talk for a minute alone, & decided that I had to have the surgery & possibly loose the baby, we knew we could conceive again but we couldn’t loose me & when I said that my mom & I had connected, making it the best moment ever. Then to top it off, she was chosen to be in the delivery room with me along side my husband, which made the whole experience memorable. I know its a corny memory but it means a ton to me.

I was 8 years old, and the end of school year was coming up. Each year, there is a sports day, and we needed to wear shorts for the day. My family, being poor, couldn’t afford to go out and get me a pair. My “god mother” sat down at her sewing machine and made me a wonderful pair with little purple flowers. I was so proud of them! Believe it or not, I still have them today, 26 years later! She passed away a year after I graduated high school, and I miss her dearly. She was like my mother.

My mom and I have always been really close. We are like sisters. Last year for my senior year of high school, my mom chaperoned a Choir trip and went with me to Washington, DC. She hadn’t been there since she was very little and didn’t remember a lot and I’d never been. We stayed 3 days and walked so many miles, but she got to see me perform in momentous places. I performed in the amphitheater in Arlington Cemetery, in front of the WWI & WWII Memorial, the Law Enforcement Memorial, in random streets for the homeless, & in the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. I had been asked to do a solo part in a song but my voice wasn’t holding up. I voluntarily gave the song to another choral member but I hated myself for not doing the song. My mom looked at me and said: “The fact that you admitted that you couldn’t do the song was worth it. To me, you’re the one with the most beautiful voice. You’re the one I look for in the crowd. You’re the one I listen for during performances, and I can’t hear anybody else but you.” That made everything worth it. 🙂

My greatest memory with my mom is one New Years Eve we all got together. I have 4 siblings and New Yeas Eve is my mom’s birthday. We ended up playing rock band for hours! With all of us we literally had enough to make “the band”. My mom and i sang! It was hilarious!! It has become a new tradition in our family now and we do it every year. It’s still just as funny as the first time!!

In 1960, my father left my mother with me and pregnant with my sister. In a time that single moms weren’t the norm, my mother did a wonderful job! She went back to school and became a registered nurse, taught the pre-school Sunday school class, and showed my sister and me how to be independent, educated, Godly women. My favorite memory is the time my high school cheer squad won the Kentucky High School Cheerleading State Championship in 1976. (Our coach was with us but not our school sponsor. How times have changed.)At that time no other team at our school had ever won a state title. My mother saw that we would have a lovely celebratory dinner at our hotel, paid for it herself, and then took the bill to our principal. He told her he didn’t think the school would pay for that, and she told him and the superintendent that perhaps a letter to the editor letting the community know that our school system didn’t support girl’s sport or endeavors was in order. Title IX had not been passed at the time and basketball, track, and Cheerleading were the only girl’s athletic opportunities available. Needless to say, they did pay for our dinner and put our picture up where it remains today. Her examples affected me both personally and professionally throughout my life. She passed away in 1995, and though it is still her voice I hear in my mind encouraging me, I miss her every day!

My mother had to raise 4 of us on her own. She is an amazing, strong woman who I admire very much. I think the greatest memory I have of her is seeing her at my college graduation. The expression on her face has stuck with me for years and years. Her pride and love at what I have accomplished is a wonderful memory to carry with me. She wasn’t able to go to college herself because she was raising her children and sacrificing so much in the face of great obstacles. I now have children myself and am just beginning to see how hard she worked for us.

My greatest memory of mom is during her chemotherapy and her radiation therapy while battling throat cancer she could not talk, and it was super icy out because we just had a huge ice storm. I was only 16 and she stayed up and waited for me in the dining room when I got home. I was balling because i had did a 180 but got back going straight and was so anxious and upset and she was there to comfort me even though she couldn’t say anything.!

My mom has been gone for over 20 years now. One of the fondest memories I have with her is coming home from school and watching her “stories” with her. Our faorite was The Guiding Light.
