Jonah’s Journey – 5 weeks Postop
As many of you know our son, Jonah, who is 13, underwent open heart surgery on February 23rd. His recovery has been pretty amazing with a few hiccups. It has been emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausting at times, but we have truly trusted in God.
Jonah’s heart had went into junctional rhythm, so his cardiologist ordered a 48-hour Holter Monitor a week ago to see exactly what was going on. Last night he text me with the results.
We are so thrilled that it looks like the junctional rhythm is combined with normal sinus rhythm. That means that his heart is healing. There may still be some problems, but for the most part, Jonah’s heart is healing well. They will reevaluate him at eight weeks postop to make sure he is in normal sinus rhythm.
There has been talk about him possibly needing a pacemaker, but we are completely believing God that he will go back into normal sinus rhythm.
This weekend his team had two soccer games. We went to both games. It was very hard to watch Jonah sitting on the bench knowing how badly he wants to get out there and play. He was cheering his team on, of course, but I just knew he wanted to be in on the action LOL 🙂
He has gotten the clearance that he can start practicing this Thursday. We just have to report to his cardiologist how he does and Jonah knows to take it slow. Well, if you know Jonah, I am not sure that is possible.
He also got the okay to start walking on the treadmill. He has been walking about 2 miles a day for the last few days. He told us today, he just wants to get back out on the field.
He loves the game and he loves his team. In all the years Jonah has played, this team has just meshed really well. It is fun watching the boys excel and grow not only as better soccer players, but as better people. His teammates and coach have been great with Jonah and our family. We have had so much support it has been wonderful.
This is a picture Jamie took of the coach with the players after the game today. What a great group of boys.
Tentatively, Jonah’s first game will be April 19th. He is so excited and honestly Jamie and I are too. I know it will be a very emotional day for us. To think, just weeks before that, he was lying in a bed after open heart surgery. I look at this picture of him and Jamie the day after his surgery and how he struggled to even stand up.
Then, I look at him today and all I can do is Thank God. I know I will be worried as he gets “roughed up” during the game, but what a testimony once again this will be for Jonah.
He truly is a warrior. He has never given up. He has remained faithful to God knowing His plans are good for him. I think this time of his illness has truly helped him grow in his faith and as a young man.
The thing about Jonah is, he has a heart for others. He is truly a very selfless young man. Our hearts are full of joy as we get closer to the day he can walk back on the field and play the game he loves – SOCCER!!
Thank you all for your continued prayers. We still have no idea what obstacles Jonah may face from this surgery, as there is little research on his condition, but the one thing remains . . God is faithful and he has done amazing things through Jonah already.
GOD IS GOOD. . . ALL THE TIME!!
