How Can We Stop Bullying?
This has been a very emotional week for us. As most of you know, our 14 y/o son, Isaiah, has endured much bullying during his life. He is currently in the 8th grade, but functions at a much lower level due to drug/alcohol exposure from his birth mom and has a severe learning disability. Last Friday, we received a call at 6:30 pm from our assistant principal about a pretty severe incident at school. We had been informed earlier in the day about an incident the night before at a girl’s basketball game. This incident involved two boys “roughing Isaiah up”. When she called at 6:30 it was regarding some new information that had surfaced from the incident at the game. Allegedly the two boys had urinated on a candy push pop and had Isaiah lick it in front of several other students. We were informed that one of the two boys had called him the N word and told him to go pick his cotton. The school reviewed the videotape which proved much of the allegations. We were saddened Isaiah had not told us. He shared with us he did not go to the principal, ass’t principal, or us, because the last time he spoke up, the boys told him he could no longer hang out with them or eat lunch with them. This meant he sat alone. Fortunately three girls who were at the game were concerned enough to bring it to the attention of the principal and assistant principal, which led to the investigation. We were informed that the boys were suspended pending further investigation.
On Monday, one of the boys admitted that they rubbed the push pop in the urinal before bringing it back in the gym and giving it to Isaiah. We immediately called our pediatrician to have test run to make sure he had not contracted any diseases. Due to the severity of these allegations, the police were notified and began their investigation as to whether criminal charges were warranted. As parents, our hearts are sad and we hurt for our son, but with our strong faith we know that God can be glorified through this.
First and foremost, we are thankful to our school system (principal and assistant principal) for stepping up and handling this in an appropriate manner including our Superintendent and School Board President. They are not taking this lightly. We are asking or prayers for our family, the boys and their families, and our entire school district. It is a tough time. As we have spent time in prayer over the last week, we have been seeking God’s wisdom on how we can best turn this into a positive. We are thinking of having a Love One Another Day, where kids will wear red/pink shirts, sit with different kids at lunch, and do random acts of kindness to kids they don’t know. Love NEVER fails and this is a perfect time to step up and show people that good can come out of any negative situation. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, I would love to hear them. In the meantime, thank you all for your prayers, love, and support. This means so much.
Many have asked if they can send Isaiah a card and we know that would mean so much to him.
Cards/Letters can be sent to:
